Littleborough Viaduct; a grade 2 listed building situated at Littleborough
on the junction of the A58 Todmorden Road and Hollingworth Lane.
There were several nasty cracks to the brickwork barrel of the bridge
that were gradually getting worse. Each section between the cracks
moved separately as the trains passed over.
The "Helifix Advanced Engineering System" of beams, cemties
and cross stitches were designed to regain the structural integrity
of the bridge.

The first job was to clean the barrel; our cleaning system of water
and grit removed all oil, grime and loose friable material without
damaging the face of the bricks. After raking out the bed joints
every 5th course of the whole barrel to a depth of 50mm, we inserted
2 no 6mm bars into "MM2" grout in every slot. Each set
of bars was doweled 4cm into the large voussoir stones. Then 3no
1.2m x10mm CemTies were fixed through every voussoir stone into
the brick barrel. A series of 5cm long cross stitches were then
fixed at 450mm centres the full length of each crack. The slots
were then repointed with a lime and cement mortar, coloured to match the existing. To finish off the job we
repaired the voussoir stones damaged by passing lorries using a
pre-mixed repair mortar, again, colour matched as near as possible
to the original.
The result: an unobstrusive sympathetic repair that has really
worked. The bridge still moves as one would expect when a 100 ton
train passes over; but every thing is now tied together. It even
sounds solid. An added bonus, the planners are extremely pleased
with the end result. This road is very busy during the day, so we
worked at night and closed the road from 8 pm to 6 am. The contract
was for six weeks; we were able to complete the project in only
4 weeks.
