We
were asked to quote over the phone for a repair to a window Head lintel
on this detached house in Driffield. As it sounded like only a very
small job we gave a provisional verbal price over the phone. On arriving
at the property an inspection revealed the true cause of the problem.
There were a number of cracks on the front elevation that would need
repairing before work could be carried out on the front lintel. After
a discussion with the owner it turned out that in WWII all the houses
nearby had been flattened by bombs. The elderly gentleman who lived
there had forgotten that the house had been shaken by the bomb blasts
and requiring repairing then. The original repairs must have been very
good as it had taken nearly 60 years for the arch to move again.
We installed a Helibeam to the brickwork between the ground floor
and 1st floor windows, and to the brickwork beneath the ground floor
windows. Two brick arches were jacked up to their original position,
and all the loose mortar removed from the joints and the voids filled
with resin. The bricks that were cracked could not be replaced so
we repaired the face with Eproface, a modified repair mortar. The
colour match made it impossible to find the repaired bricks. We then
repointed the areas that had been worked on with a lime mortar that
blended in with the existing pointing.
